The Issue
In remote Communities across Australia access to books can be difficult as there are often no libraries and bookstores. Access to reading material is extremely limited and this impacts the opportunities for children to engage in reading. Research shows that bilingual books and education help to accelerate reading and support young people to thrive. Learning to read in your First Language accelerates education and is every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child’s right. The Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) is Community-led, responding to requests from remote Communities for culturally relevant books, including early learning board books, resources, and programs to support Communities to create and publish their stories in languages of their choice. The ILF has gifted over 1 million books to remote Communities through the Book Supply program, implemented its early literacy program Book Buzz into 116 remote playgroups and published 235 titles reflecting up to 45 Indigenous languages.
